About
Victoria Inglezi (née Cheșco) was a prominent figure in Bessarabian society in the 19th century, whose existence became the subject of an urban legend in old Chișinău. Although exact biographical data is fragmented, her figure is closely linked to the city's social history and the collective memory preserved through her funerary monument in the Central Cemetery on Armenească Street. Born into the Cheșco family, an influential and respected one, Victoria entered local history not only through her social status but, more importantly, through the tragedy and mystery that shrouded the end of her life. She is often mentioned in Chișinău's cultural chronicles due to her tomb, which has become an attraction for local history enthusiasts because of the funerary sculpture depicting an angel with "dismantled" (sectioned) wings. This unusual artistic representation has given rise to many interpretations and legends, being read as a metaphor for unfulfilled love, a life cut short prematurely, or a destiny marked by melancholy. In the oral narratives passed down by the people of Chișinău, Victoria Inglezi is described as a woman whose personal story, marked by a tragic destiny, transcended the passage of time, becoming a symbol of "Chișinău of yesteryear." Although information about her public activities is limited in official historical sources, she remains an emblematic figure of the era, representing that category of local personalities whose identity was shaped more by the aura of mystery in cultural memory than by administrative chronicles. Her tomb, with its specific aesthetic, continues to be a landmark in the capital's funerary heritage, serving as a testament to the artistic and cultural sensibilities of the Bessarabian space of the time.
