About

Veronica Bacalu was born in 1961 in the village of Mihălășeni, Ocnița district, Republic of Moldova, into a family of teachers. She began her career in economics after graduating with honors from the Plekhanov Institute of National Economy in Moscow in 1983, specializing in economic cybernetics. She initially worked at the Planning Research Institute and the Ministry of Economy, and between 1993 and 2002 held key positions at the National Bank of Moldova, culminating in the post of Vice Governor and member of the Board of Directors. There, she was involved in designing and implementing monetary policy, developing the foreign exchange market, managing reserves, and restructuring sovereign debt, including the 1999 buyback operation of bonds to Gazprom, saving the country from major debt. Since 2002, Veronica Bacalu has worked at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the United States, where she has held various positions in the European and Middle East and Central Asia departments, focusing on economies in transition. She has led missions to countries such as Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, negotiated assistance programs and Article IV consultations, and is currently Deputy Division Chief of the Central Bank Operations Division in the Monetary and Capital Markets Department. Her international experience distinguishes her as a skilled professional, effective negotiator, and macroeconomist with a focus on European integration, being described by colleagues as a modest, demanding, and reform-minded person. Although she has lived in the US for over two decades, Veronica Bacalu has been repeatedly proposed as a candidate for the presidency of the Republic of Moldova by political alliances and parties such as AIE, PLDM, and PDM, due to her economic expertise and strong pro-European vision, stating that the country has passed the point of no return on its path to EU integration. Details about her personal life remain limited in public sources, but her rural origin and her journey from local economist to global expert position her as a model of success in international finance, contributing to the economic stability of emerging countries.
