About
Viorica Tonu is a remarkable athlete from the Republic of Moldova, specializing in teqball, a hybrid sport between football and table tennis, played on a curved table with a football, without the use of hands. At just 28 years old, she holds the seventh position in the women's world rankings and has achieved notable performances, such as qualifying for the top 16 at the 2023 Teqball World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, after only seven months of practice. She also won the silver medal at the Teqball World Series in China, in the mixed doubles event alongside Pole Marek Pokwap, losing the final only to a Thai pair. She collaborates closely with the National Olympic and Sports Committee of the Republic of Moldova (CNOS), which has promoted her international successes, and participates in the world teqball circuits organized by the international federation. Viorica represented Moldova at the World Championships in Thailand, where she defeated the representative of Belgium and won a match against the athlete from France, qualifying for the group stage for the first time after only her second championship participation. Her performances contribute to the promotion of teqball in Moldova, a relatively new sport that emerged in 2017, and inspire young local athletes. Besides her sports career, Viorica Tonu is involved in promoting personal development through innovative activities such as neuro-juggling, offering online training and free open sessions at the sports hall in Bardar, accessible to both professional athletes and amateurs. This initiative reflects a holistic approach, combining high-performance sports with physical and mental education, and is promoted on her social media platforms. Although information about her personal life remains discreet, her rapid determination in teqball positions her as a role model for female athletes in Moldova.
