About

Tatiana Salcuțan, born on April 16, 2001, in Tiraspol, Republic of Moldova, is one of the most remarkable Moldovan swimmers, specializing in the backstroke event. Her career began to shine internationally in 2015, when she won the silver medal at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Tbilisi, in the 200m backstroke, followed by silver at the 2016 European Junior Championships in Hódmezővásárhely. She has accumulated multiple bronze medals at European junior championships (2017, 2018) and at the Kazan World Cup (2018), culminating in gold at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, in 2018, in the 200m backstroke, thus establishing herself as the first gold Olympic medalist in the history of Moldovan women's swimming. The athlete represented the Republic of Moldova at three consecutive Summer Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020 (where she set the national record of 2:09.98 in the 200m backstroke and reached the semifinals), Paris 2024 (23rd place in the 200m backstroke), and previous participations at Worlds and Europeans, including 10th place at the 2024 European Championships. With a height of 180-182 cm and a weight of approximately 60-66 kg, Tatiana competed under coach Evgheni Carabețchi, collaborating with the national swimming federation and participating in major competitions such as the World Championships in Budapest (2017, 2022), Gwangju (2019), and Fukuoka (2023), where she achieved notable positions in the 100m and 200m backstroke events. Although details about her personal life remain private, her exemplary determination, forged through years of intense training, has inspired generations of Moldovan athletes. Her personal best of 2:10.12 in the 200m backstroke and multiple top 20 world rankings reflect an iron will, contributing to the promotion of swimming as a performance sport in the country, where the backstroke discipline has become a female strong point since independence.
