Irina Ionescu, born Brandis in Chișinău, had a remarkable career in chess, an intellectual sport of great strategic precision. Twice champion of Moldova in 1989 and 1991, she participated in the 1991 Soviet Women's Chess Team Championship, and in Romania, she excelled in the National Championship finals, winning gold in 2002, silver in 1996 and 1997. In 2001, she obtained the title of International Grandmaster, with an Elo peak of 2287, participating with the Romanian team in the 2000 Chess Olympiad and the 2001 and 2003 European Team Championships, where she won individual bronze at the third board. Her activity took place predominantly in Romania, where she represented the country in major international competitions and contributed to the performances of the national women's team. Recently, she was appointed coach at the chess section of a sports club, sharing her vast experience with new generations of players. With a current Elo of 2128, Irina Ionescu remains a symbol of excellence in Romanian chess, promoting discipline and strategy in the competitive sports environment. Although details about her personal life are not widely publicly available, her career illustrates the dedication of a woman originating from the Republic of Moldova who prospered in Romania, adapting to the Romanian sports context and contributing to the development of women's chess. Unfortunately, the Romanian Chess Federation announced her passing in April of the current year, leaving behind a legacy of achievements that continuously inspire young chess players.
