Deleanu Baca

She was born in the village of Vadul-Rașcov (now in Șoldănești district, Republic of Moldova) in Soroca county, Bessarabia, (interwar Romania) into the family of pharmacist Peisah Rivelis and Fira (Esther) Rivelis. In childhood, she lived with her family in Soroca. With the outbreak of World War II, she was deported with her parents and younger sister, Țilia, to the Olgopol ghetto in Transnistria, where her parents were executed. After liberation in 1944, she returned to Soroca, and in the same year married the poet Liviu Deleanu. She graduated from the Faculty of Philology at the University of Chișinău. She was primarily employed in translating fiction works (mainly for children) from Italian, German, French, and Russian into the "Moldovan language" (Romanian). After her husband's death, she selected and prepared for publication about thirty collections from her husband's literary heritage. In 2002, for her Romanian translation of the book "The Adventures of Cipollino," she was awarded an honorary diploma by the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) within UNESCO. She was a member of the Writers' Union of Moldova. She was buried in Chișinău next to her husband.
