She was awarded the title of "best actress of Moldovan cinema of the 20th century". In 1976, she left the theater stage in favor of film roles, being hired by the film studio "Moldova film" and cast by Emil Loteanu in several films directed by him. The roles that established her as a film actress are Ioana in Red Meadows (1966), Rada in The Gipsy Camp (1975), and Veronica in The Morning Star (1986). As recognition for her exceptional performance, Svetlana Toma received the Award for Best Female Role (Rada) at the Prague International Film Festival (1977), the Diploma "Best Actress of the Festival" (for her role in the film The Gipsy Camp) at the Panama International Film Festival (1977), the Diploma of the Union of Cinematographers and the State Committee for Cinematography for Best Female Role (Chisinau, 1979) in the film I Want to Sing. Svetlana Toma currently lives in Moscow. She is a vegetarian. In April 2008, actress Svetlana Toma received the title of Honorary Citizen of the municipality of Bălți, for "substantial contribution to the development of culture and art, as well as for supporting friendly relations with the municipality of Bălți", following an initiative from the associations of Russian, Jewish, and Ukrainian communities in the locality.
