Sofia Polcanova is a table tennis player of Moldovan origin, born on September 3, 1994, in Chișinău. At the age of 14, in 2008, she moved to Austria alone, settling in Linz, where she played for the renowned club Linz AG Froschberg. After obtaining Austrian citizenship in 2010, she built a remarkable career in international team sports, participating in three editions of the Olympic Games (2016, 2020, and 2024) and representing Austria at several world and European championships. The most significant stage of her career culminated in a series of notable successes at European and world competitions. In 2022, at the European Championships in Munich, Polcanova won two gold medals – in the singles event and in the doubles event (alongside Bernadette Szőcs) – as well as bronze in mixed doubles with Robert Gardos. At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, she became the first Austrian player to reach the quarterfinals in the singles event. A career highlight was the year 2025, when she achieved her first world championship medal – silver in women's doubles at the World Championships in Doha, alongside Szőcs, representing Austria's first world championship medal since 2003. Polcanova stands out for her aggressive playing style, being a left-handed player with a two-sided topspin technique. She held the number one position in the European rankings and maintained top spots in the world rankings, reaching tenth place in October 2022. Off the table, she is an athlete within the Austrian Centre of Military Sports, holding the military rank of platoon commander, and is known for her dedication to sports as well as for her valuable representation of Austria on the international table tennis scene.
