Peșcova Maia

Maia Peșcova was a Russian radio journalist of Moldovan origin, particularly noted for her career at the station "Echo of Moscow," where she worked from the 1990s until her final months. Born on September 22, 1946, in the city of Soroca, in the Moldavian SSR, she began her professional activity at the age of 17, translating mathematical literature from English, and later working as a consistent translator from Yiddish. From the first half of the 1970s until the early 1990s, she was a researcher at the N. S. Kurnakov Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry in Moscow, before transitioning entirely to media and literature. On an editorial and radio level, Maia Peșcova became known as the author of widely popular programs at "Echo of Moscow," including "The Time That Has Not Been Fulfilled" (about people and events from the past), "The Book Casino," "Children's Playground," "Contents," and "Books and Around Them." She gained national recognition for the series of broadcasts "The Time That Has Not Been Fulfilled," which earned her the Alexander Blok Silver Medal in 2006, as well as the "Book Mole" award (2018) for her contribution to promoting culture and reading on the radio. In 2010, she was a laureate of the "Artem Borovik" award in the radio category, for the series dedicated to the anniversary of the US victory in World War II. In her personal life, Maia Peșcova was Jewish, born into a modest family in Soroca. She attended school with a silver medal and graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry at Moldova State University in Chișinău, later completing her training with a second degree in polygraphy. She lived most of her life in Moscow, where she died on October 23, 2021.
