Gaju Filareta

Igumenia Filareta (Gaju), born on October 23, 1967, in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, chose the monastic path, becoming a prominent figure in the Russian Orthodox ecclesiastical administration. In 2004, she was appointed abbess of the Krestovozdvijenski Monastery in Nizhny Novgorod by Bishop George, after serving as nun Tatiana at the Seraphimo-Diveevski Holy Trinity Monastery. Her ascending career in the church hierarchy culminated in 2006 with her tonsure into the great schema, receiving the name Filareta in honor of Saint Hierarch Philaret, Metropolitan of Moscow, and being awarded the golden pectoral cross. Under her leadership, the Krestovozdvijenski Monastery within the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese experienced significant spiritual and administrative development. In 2012, Archbishop George of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas elevated her to the rank of igumenia, consolidating her leadership role within the Nizhny Novgorod diocese. Her administrative activity focused on organizing monastic life, restoring traditions, and managing the sisterhood, contributing to the revitalization of post-Soviet Russian monasteries. Although detailed information about her personal life remains limited in public sources, her Moldovan origin illustrates the close ties between believers in the ex-Soviet space and the Russian Orthodox Church. Her family, likely influenced by the spiritual context of the region, supported her monastic vocation, allowing her to emigrate and integrate into Russian administrative structures, where she became a model of devotion and efficiency in managing female communities.
