About

Liuba Dimitriu was born into a mixed family: her father, Lazăr Dimitriev, was of Bulgarian origin and worked as a state excise official, while her mother, Vasilisa, was Greek. After graduating from the Comrat High School, she settled in Chișinău, where she held various positions: Clerk at the Chișinău Archbishopric (1916) Translator at the Chișinău City Hall (1919-1923) Employee at the Police Prefecture (1923-1930) She began writing poetry at the age of 18, showing precocious talent and a deep understanding of the Romanian language. Although she came from a family with diverse ethnic origins, Liuba Dimitriu considered herself Romanian and Romanianized her surname in 1918. Her only volume of poetry, titled "Crinii Basarabiei" (The Lilies of Bessarabia), was published posthumously in 1931, with the support of the Chișinău Municipality, and was promoted by Ovid Densusianu. This volume includes poems written between 1920 and 1930, in which the author addresses themes such as love for Bessarabia, the beauty of nature, and reflections on the human condition. Literary critics noted the sensitive lyricism and emotional depth of her verses. Her poems represent a transition from Eminescu's epigones to modernist poetics, sensibility, and mentality.
