About
Vera Bahtalovschi (b. 1922) made her literary debut at the age of 14, in the spring of 1936, with the publication in Chișinău of the short story collection "Fiul câmpului" and "Doi prieteni mici". Wishing to build her own artistic identity independent of her family's academic prestige – her father, Iosif Bahtalovschi, and other family members being established authors of scientific literature – she adopted the literary pseudonym "Veronica Pod". The work represents a unique piece in the interwar Bessarabian publishing landscape, marking an exception through its collaboration with graphic artist Gheorghe C. Gegolcoff. This association lent the booklet exceptional artistic value, being one of the few children's books of the era illustrated by a master of graphic arts. Vera Bahtalovschi's debut remains significant not only for its literary merit but also for the importance of book graphics during that period, constituting a moment of intersection between the creative drive of a teenager and the artistic maturity of a renowned graphic artist.
