Irina Bulmaga, born on November 11, 1993, in Chișinău, Republic of Moldova, is the best female chess player in Romania, holding the titles of International Master (2013) and Woman Grandmaster (2012). She began playing chess at the age of 8, under the guidance of her grandfather, quickly achieving notable success, including the title of women's national champion of Moldova at just 14 years old. Since 2009, she has represented Romania, where she has won multiple national championships in classical, rapid, blitz, and chess solving, as well as an individual bronze medal at the 2014 Chess Olympiad. Her most recent historic achievement is becoming the European Women's Vice-Champion in 2025, in Rhodes, Greece, with 8 points out of 11 games, marking Romania's best result in 25 years of individual European women's competitions. She has represented Romania at eight Chess Olympiads (2010-2024), six European Team Chess Championships (2011-2021), and the Women's World Cup, also participating in the World Women's Team Chess Championship in 2013. She won the European title in chess solving in 2015 and achieved success in team championships, including the German first division with Schwabisch Hall (2016/2017) and becoming national team champion with Politehnica Iași. With an ELO rating of over 2440 in standard chess, she consistently ranks in the top 100 women globally, holding 51st place in the world in 2024, being a constant presence in the elite of Romanian and international chess. The passion for chess defined Irina Bulmaga's life, who gave up a conventional childhood for intense training, moving to Romania at the age of 16 for fiercer competition and better support. Emotional and disciplined, she emphasizes the importance of hard work over talent, instinct developed through study, and daily routine, complemented by reading and traveling for relaxation. Although chess involves major financial sacrifices in Romania, where unstable prizes and a lack of state support discourage young talents, she dreams of Olympic medals and a system that secures a decent living for athletes, inspiring generations through perseverance and love for the sport of the mind.
