About
Zinaida Anestiadi, the founder of the endocrinology service in the Republic of Moldova, was born on September 1, 1938, in the village of Sărătenii Vechi, Telenești district. She graduated with honors from the Middle School in Orhei in 1952 and from the Chișinău State Institute of Medicine in 1961, starting her career as an endocrinologist at the Republican Clinical Hospital. In 1964, she established and headed the Endocrinology Department until 1977, and in 1972, she founded the Department of Endocrinology at the 'Nicolae Testemițanu' State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, which she directed until 2009. She served as the principal endocrinologist of the Ministry of Health between 1972 and 2009, developing national programs such as 'MoldDiab' for diabetes and the eradication of iodine deficiency diseases. As a university professor and doctor habilitat in medical sciences, she defended her doctoral thesis in 1969 on the treatment of diffuse toxic goiter with radioactive iodine, and her doctor habilitat thesis in 1981 in Kyiv on diabetes mellitus and age. She published over 200 scientific papers, two textbooks (including one in English), seven inventions, and supervised 25 doctoral theses and three doctor habilitat theses. President of the Society of Endocrinologists of the Republic of Moldova, member of the New York Academy of Medicine and other international associations, she participated in congresses in Europe and promoted global standards in endocrinology, being honored with the title of 'Om Emerit' and the Order of 'Gloria Muncii'. She passed away on September 27, 2017, in Chișinău, leaving a legacy through the national school of endocrinology formed by her disciples who are active internationally. Married since 1956 to physician Vasile Anestiadi, a doctor habilitat and founder of the Scientific Center of Pathobiology, she had a son, Vasile junior, doctor of medicine, continuing the family tradition in the medical field. Her contributions deeply marked Moldovan internal medicine and endocrinology.
