About

Ecaterina Vasenina, also known as Katie, is a sportswoman and researcher from the Republic of Moldova who has built a remarkable career in competitive tennis and then in scientific research. After discovering the University of South Florida through a Google search initiated by her mother, Vasenina moved to the United States and played for the Bulls women's tennis team between 2009 and 2013. As a player, she was recognized as a top player, reaching the number 26 national ranking in singles and being named All-BIG EAST in 2011 and 2012. Alongside her partner Loreto Alonso-Martinez, she formed a strong doubles pair, ranked 12th nationally according to ITA rankings. The transition from a player career to an academic one was natural for Vasenina, who showed an early interest in personal development and innovation. After obtaining her bachelor's degree in international studies from USF in 2012, she continued with a master's degree in global sustainability in 2014. Vasenina worked as an assistant coach for the women's tennis program at Loyola Marymount University and held various positions in coaching and sports management, including assistant tennis director at Fig Garden Swim & Racquet Club in Fresno, California, where she coordinated junior tennis programs and organized tournaments. Today, Vasenina works as an assistant professor at the University of Tampa, specializing in exercise science and the study of athletic performance. Her research focuses on the interaction between nutrition and physical exercise, with a particular emphasis on collagen protein and the mechanisms of muscle and tendon recovery. With a PhD obtained from the University of Central Florida in 2025, Vasenina leads studies on the impact of dietary supplements and different types of proteins on athletic performance, specifically examining populations of tennis players and athletes with diverse dietary regimens. Her scientific work includes presentations at national and international conferences, student mentoring, and public communication regarding evidence-based nutrition strategies.
