Elisabeth Ivanovsky was born on July 25, 1910, in Chișinău, then part of the Russian Empire, and had a remarkable career as an illustrator and visual artist. Although available biographical data places her mostly in Belgium, where she settled in 1932, she collaborated with prestigious French publishers and writers, undertaking significant work in the field of literary and editorial illustration. Between 1932 and 1944, she studied at École La Cambre in Brussels, where she trained under important masters, and her talent was recognized by the Belgian writer Franz Hellens, who entrusted her with illustrations for several of his works. The illustrator's career developed through collaborations with numerous European publishers, including French ones, for books primarily intended for children's literature. She illustrated over 346 titles published in more than 20 languages, with a distinctive aesthetic characterized by influences from Russian constructivism and avant-garde artistic traditions. Between 1937 and 1946, she worked intensively with the Belgian poet René Meurant, whom she married in 1944. Together, they created the Pomme d'Api series of miniatures, which achieved considerable commercial success and marked the history of children's illustration during the interwar period. After her marriage in 1944, Elisabeth Ivanovsky acquired Belgian citizenship and continued a prolific career in illustration and set design until old age. She passed away on April 11, 2006, in Brussels, leaving behind a vast collection of works that significantly influenced modern children's album art and were recognized with exhibitions at the National Library of France and prestigious cultural institutions in Europe.
