Irina VanPatten is a Moldovan writer based in the United States, known for her literary voice that blends humor, sincerity, and an Eastern European perspective with the sensibilities of life in America. Originally from Moldova and often described as a Pacific Northwest author with Eastern European roots, she writes in English, drawing on her life experiences before and after emigration to create texts with a warm, ironic, and memorable tone. Her best-known book is the memoir "Mail-Order Family," in which she recounts the journey of a divorced woman with two children who rebuilds her life after the collapse of the Soviet space and her move to America. She also published the non-fiction volume "Welcome to America, Welcome Home," based on interviews with immigrants from various communities, and her short story "I Love You Russian Style" appeared in the anthology "From Lullaby to Love Songs and Funeral Dirges." In her journalistic work, she has been noted for her approach to themes such as immigration, identity, family, women's and migrants' rights, as well as her ability to transform difficult experiences into vibrant literature. On a personal level, Irina VanPatten emigrated to the United States in 2002 with two of her children, at the age of 33, after having already developed her love for reading and passion for writing in Moldova. She spoke about her difficult beginnings in a new country, about the work and perseverance that helped her adapt, and about the fact that she only started publishing her first volume at the age of 50, demonstrating that a literary career can flourish at any time. Currently, she continues to write and mentioned that she is working on a sequel to the book "Mail-Order Family," keeping at the center of her work the idea that personal stories can become bridges between cultures and generations.
