Propișan Sofia

Sofia Naumovna Propișan was born on November 2, 1950, in Chișinău, Moldova, into a family of remarkable musicians. Her father, Naum Propișan, was a violinist, and her mother, Gita Strahilievici, was a pianist. This artistic heritage led her to pursue a career in music, graduating from the Moscow State Conservatory P. I. Tchaikovsky in 1969, where she studied violin under the guidance of Gala V. Barinova and chamber music with R.D. Dubinski. Throughout a career dedicated to art and education, Sofia Propișan established herself as a renowned concert violinist and pedagogue in Russia. From 1969 to 1972, she collaborated with the quintets of the Kalinin Regional Philharmonic Societies and the radio-television committees in Moldova, and then pursued doctoral studies at the Gorky State Conservatory (today the M.I. Glinka Conservatory in Nizhny Novgorod) under the supervision of Professor S.L. Yaroshevich. In 1975, she achieved laureate status at the International Chamber Music Competition within the Prague Spring Festival, a significant recognition of her talent and dedication. Her major contribution to musical and cultural education was realized through her role as artistic director of the "Sofia" Soloists Ensemble in Nizhny Novgorod (1990-2003) and the "Artis" Early Music Chamber Ensemble (since 2003). Sofia Propischan was promoted to the rank of professor at the M.I. Glinka Conservatory and became the head of the Bowed Instruments Department, a position in which she contributed to the training of generations of musicians. The title of Honored Artist of Russia (1993) consecrated the national recognition of her merits. Sofia Propischan passed away on February 13, 2024, at the age of 73, leaving behind a legacy of a life dedicated to artistic excellence and the training of young musicians.
