Eugenia Maleșevschi (1868–1942) was a remarkable Bessarabian painter and graphic artist, a prominent figure in the artistic life of the first half of the 20th century. Origins and studies: She was born on December 10, 1868, in the village of Harbuțcani (today Pohoarna, Șoldănești district). She pursued prestigious studies at the Odesa School of Drawing and later at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, where she studied in the studio of the famous painter Ilya Repin. Artistic activity: Eugenia Maleșevschi was one of the central figures who defined the interwar Bessarabian art era, alongside other renowned artists such as Alexandru Plămădeală or August Baillayre. She excelled in both painting (academic realism, portraits, salon themes) and graphics, being among the first artists in the Prut-Dniester region to master the technique of engraving (etching). Pedagogical career: After settling in Chișinău in 1906, she made a significant contribution to artistic education, being a drawing teacher in various private schools and, for a period, at the Chișinău School of Fine Arts, being noted as the only woman on the school's teaching staff at that time. Legacy: His works are preserved today in important collections, including at the National Museum of Art of Moldova and the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. In 2011, Moldovan Post issued a stamp in his honor, marking the importance of his work in the local cultural heritage. Although there are some controversies in historical sources regarding the exact date and place of death (some sources indicating 1942 in Chisinau, others mentioning Greece, 1958), Eugenia Maleșevschi remains an emblematic figure for the modernization of fine arts in Bessarabia.
