Nelly Kameneva was one of the most important theater actresses in the Republic of Moldova, an emblematic presence on the Russian-speaking stage in Chisinau. Born in Uman and trained at the Kiev Institute of Theater Arts, she began her career in 1953, debuting at the Russian Theater "Anton Chekhov" in Chisinau, where she played over 160 roles throughout her life. Through her acting, recognized for its inner strength and psychological finesse, she created memorable characters from universal and Soviet dramaturgy. Throughout her career, Nelly Kameneva collaborated closely with the Russian Drama Theater "Anton Chekhov" in Chisinau, an institution with which she identified throughout her professional life. She played remarkable roles such as Arkadina, Ranevskaya, Queen Elizabeth, Filumena, Tamara, Golda, or Luci, and her performances were also appreciated through awards obtained at competitions and festivals. In terms of management, she was the artistic director and then the artistic leader of the theater during several periods, contributing to the repertoire orientation and the consolidation of the prestige of the Chisinau stage. In her personal life, public information shows she came from a Jewish family, and her destiny was deeply connected to culture and theater from childhood. She went through the difficult war years with her family, and later remained faithful to the stage until the end of her life, dying in 2007 during a performance. Her legacy continues to be honored in the Republic of Moldova, including through symbolic gestures by the "Anton Chekhov" Theater, which dedicated a hall and a commemorative plaque to her, confirming her status as an artist who profoundly marked the cultural memory of Chisinau.
