About

Eleonora Constantinov, a renowned opera director from the Republic of Moldova, was born on November 5, 1940, in Chișinău, into the family of actors Constantin Constantinov and Ecaterina Cazimirov, both members of the first troupe of the "Pushkin" National Theatre. She graduated from the "E. Coca" Music School and the "G. Musicescu" Conservatory in Chișinău, in the choral conducting class, continuing her studies at the "N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov" Conservatory in Leningrad, specializing in musical theatre directing, between 1966 and 1971. From 1971 to the present, she has worked as a director at the "Maria Bieșu" National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Chișinău, where she staged over 40 performances, including Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," Verdi's "La Traviata" and "Nabucco," Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" and "Iolanta," Borodin's "Prince Igor," and Gh. Mustea's "Alexandru Lăpușneanu." In addition to her intense stage activity, Eleonora Constantinov has been teaching at the Academy of Music, Theatre, and Fine Arts in Chisinau since 1971, at the academic singing department, teaching opera mastery, and has trained generations of artists. She has collaborated with opera houses in Constanța and Galați (Romania), the "Licurici" Puppet Theatre, and the "Serghei Lunchevici" National Philharmonic in Chisinau, participating in tours in Russia, Spain, Great Britain, Ireland, and Germany. Her distinctions include the title of Merited Artist of the MSSR (1985), the State Prize of Moldova, the Order of Labour Glory (2000), and People's Artist (2011), recognizing her essential contribution to Moldovan musical theatre. Coming from a family marked by the history of Chisinau theatre, with parents involved in the evacuation of Moldovan artists during World War II, Eleonora Constantinov grew up backstage, developing her passion for directing early on. She was married, later divorced, and has two sons; her ex-husband emigrated to Germany. Over 50 years of career have brought her collaborations with great artists such as Maria Bieșu, and her love for Chisinau, the city of her childhood, remains a common thread in her memories of a vibrant cultural center of Moldova.
