About
Anna Gutu was a mountaineer who studied in Chisinau, where she obtained her high school diploma. After graduating from Berkeley University with a degree in international relations, she discovered her passion for mountaineering in 2016, following an expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro. Determined to hone her skills, she trained at Alpine Ascents International in Seattle, training that allowed her to embark on a top-tier career in high-altitude mountaineering. Gutu became known for her ambition to become the first American woman to conquer all 14 of the world's 8,000-meter peaks, a feat achieved by fewer than 50 people worldwide. The mountaineer's career culminated in a series of impressive ascents in 2023. In June, she succeeded on Dhaulagiri, in September she conquered Kangchenjunga, and in October she reached the summit of Cho Oyu, making it her thirteenth "eight-thousander." During this period, Gutu shared her progress on social media with an audience of approximately 38,000 Instagram followers, who supported her in her race for new mountaineering history. Only Shishapangma in Tibet remained as her final objective to fulfill her historic dream. The tragedy struck on October 7, 2023, on the slopes of the Tibetan mountain Shishapangma. While attempting the final ascent alongside Nepali guide Mingma Sherpa, a massive avalanche devastated the region around the 7800-meter mark. Guțu and the guide were lost as they faced a narrowing weather window and increasing danger. His American rival for the same record, Gina Marie Rzucidlo, died in the same avalanche a few hours later, a tragic coincidence that marked the end of a true race against time on the Tibetan mountain.
