About
Ludmila Vedean Donciu is the first woman from the Republic of Moldova to cross the Sahara Desert on foot, as part of the famous Marathon des Sables race, held in Morocco. Born in Moldova but a resident of Canada for over 10 years, she successfully completed the six stages of the competition, covering approximately 250 km in extreme conditions: temperatures of 40-45°C, sand dunes, mountains, and sharp rocks, while carrying a 10-12 kg backpack. Her performance earned her a medal, placing her 92nd in the female standings out of 163 participants, from a total of over 1000 runners from 50 countries, while around 200 dropped out. Passionate about ultra-running and endurance sports, Ludmila was inspired by the book "Begi și pomni" by Moldovan entrepreneur Dmitri Volosin, which motivated her to participate in this unique challenge after years of preparation, including during the pandemic. According to ITRA (International Trail Running Association) data, she has accumulated impressive statistics, with a total of 288 km covered in completed races and a notable position in the world and national rankings of trail runners in the 40-44 age category. Her Sahara experience represents the peak of her endurance sports career, demonstrating exceptional resilience. Although she lives in Canada, Ludmila remains connected to her Moldovan roots, serving as an example of determination and courage for women in the country. Details about her personal life or family are not widely disclosed to the public, but her achievement highlights the importance of sport in overcoming physical and mental limits, in a context where Moldovan runners are increasingly making their mark internationally, similar to other endurance athletes from the region.
