About
Eugenia Lucezarskaia, also known by her stage name Jeni Luci, was a mezzo-soprano from Bessarabia, born in Chilia in 1881 and died in Bucharest in 1955. She was one of the remarkable voices of the early 20th century, establishing herself through her powerful timbre and stage presence, appreciated by both the public and specialists. Her debut took place on December 16, 1906, in the role of Nedda from Ruggero Leoncavallo's opera "Pagliacci," on the stage of the People's House Theatre "Emperor Nicholas II" in Saint Petersburg, a moment that opened her path to an international career. In the following years, Eugenia Lucezarskaia performed on important stages in Russia, Romania, and other European cultural centers. She was engaged at the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where she sang between 1906 and 1919, and after returning to the Bessarabian region, she performed at the Bessarabian Opera and debuted in Chișinău in 1919. Later, she collaborated with the lyric theatres in Cluj and Bucharest, gave concerts within the "Cântarea României" society, and performed in Rome, Naples, and Barcelona. Her repertoire included roles of great difficulty, such as Amneris, Dalila, Carmen, and other reference opera parts, earning her appreciation from prestigious conductors and artists. Besides her solo career, Eugenia Lucezarskaia also dedicated herself to pedagogy, working as a professor at the Chișinău Conservatory, where she passed on her experience to new generations of performers. She was also present in Bucharest's musical life, continuing to perform in concerts between 1932 and 1940. Public information about her personal life is scarce, but it is known that she came from a family in Chilia, and her origin and early training contributed to the journey of an artist who linked the name of Bessarabia to the great European opera stages.
