About
Iacovleva Iraida was a renowned specialist in pathological anatomy and oncology, active in the Republic of Moldova for several decades. Born in 1924 in Moscow, USSR, she graduated from Moscow Medical Institute No. 2 in 1946, and in the same year began her career at the Chisinau Medical Institute, now Nicolae Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy. From 1948 to 1963, she taught as an assistant and docent at the Department of Pathological Anatomy, and later became head of the laboratory at the Department of Pathomorphology of the Chisinau Oncology Institute until 1990. From 1990, she worked as a senior research fellow at the same institution, making a decisive contribution to the development of the Moldovan onco-pathomorphological school. In her career, Iraida Iacovleva distinguished herself through numerous studies dedicated to the histopathology of malignant tumors, particularly those of the respiratory system, female genital tract, and skin tumors. She became a Doctor Habilitatus in Medicine in 1965 and a university professor in 1967, continuing an intense activity as a scientific authority for multiple doctoral and habilitation theses in the field of oncology and pathology. In collaboration with other oncologists and pathologists, she published over 150 specialized works, including studies on cervical epithelium, metaplastic forms, and the immunohistochemical expression of HER-2 receptors in breast carcinomas, works that have consolidated the scientific evidence for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the Republic of Moldova. Through her dedicated work and scientific results, Iraida Iacovleva was appreciated both nationally and internationally, becoming a member of the Society of Oncologists of Moldova and an honorary member of the Society of Pathological Anatomy of Romania. She was awarded the title of Merited Scientist of the MSSR, the Order of the Red Banner, and, in the Republic of Moldova, the Order of Labor Glory conferred by President Petru Lucinschi, and in 2016 she received the Jubilee Medal of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova for her outstanding contribution to scientific medicine. As a person whose light was extinguished after a life devoted to all her patients and students, Iraida Iacovleva remained a role model of dedication, scientific rigor, and humanity among Moldovan doctors.
