Harjevschi Mariana

Mariana Harjevschi was born on February 15, 1977, in the village of Mereșeni, Hâncești district. She graduated from the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Sciences at the Moldova State University, specializing in Library Science, Information Assistance, and Archival Studies. Between 2004 and 2005, she attended the Junior Faculty Development Program supported by the U.S. Government at Indiana University Bloomington. In 2014, she obtained her Ph.D. in Communication Sciences from the same university. Harjevschi began her career at the "B.P. Hașdeu" Municipal Library in 1997, while still a student. She contributed to the opening of the first public law library in Moldova in 2001 – the Public Law Library, an initiative supported by the Soros Foundation Moldova. Since June 2013, she has held the position of General Director of the "B.P. Hașdeu" Municipal Library, one of the capital's most important cultural institutions. She also served as President of the Librarians' Association of the Republic of Moldova for two consecutive terms, between 2012 and 2019, under the motto "Stronger Together." In his capacity as General Director, Harjevschi promoted the modernization of libraries in the Republic of Moldova and initiated numerous innovative projects, including reading promotion campaigns such as "Chisinau Reads" and "We Read Eminescu". He coordinated the establishment of the National Center for Professional Excellence for Librarians, a partnership between the Chisinau City Hall, the Municipal Library, and the IREX Foundation. He is also employed as a lecturer at the State University of Moldova in the retraining program for Librarianship. Beyond his professional achievements, Harjevschi stands out for his dedication to the community, transforming his birthday into a fundraising platform for vulnerable children.
