About

Elena Cîlcic, born on June 3, 1996, in Comrat, Republic of Moldova, is one of the most remarkable Moldovan weightlifters, with a career marked by multiple medals at European championships and prestigious international participations. She made an impressive debut in junior and under-23 competitions, winning bronze at the 2018 U23 European Championship in Zamość (Poland) in the 75 kg category, and in 2019, gold in the total and clean and jerk, plus silver in the snatch, in Bucharest. At the senior level, her breakthrough came in 2021 in Moscow, where she won gold in the clean and jerk, bronze in the snatch, and silver in the total in the 87 kg category, becoming European vice-champion. Her performances continued with medals at the European Championships in Tirana (2022, bronze in the clean and jerk), Yerevan (2023), Sofia (2024), and Chișinău (2025, where she dominated the 81 kg category with gold in all events). The athlete proudly represented the Republic of Moldova at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (postponed to 2021), where she secured 8th place in the 87 kg category with a total of 240 kg (105 kg snatch and 135 kg clean and jerk), becoming the first Moldovan female weightlifter to qualify for that edition through an unused quota granted by the International Weightlifting Federation. She also competed at World Championships in 2018 (Ashgabat) and 2019 (Pattaya), as well as at the Rome 2020 World Cup, where she won silver. Although the Moldovan Weightlifting Federation was temporarily suspended due to doping, Cîlcic made a triumphant return in 2018, contributing to the relaunch of Moldovan weightlifting on the international stage. Little public information is available about Elena Cîlcic's personal life, but it is known that she originates from the Gagauzia region, which adds regional symbolism to her national achievements. Her career illustrates the resilience of Moldovan female weightlifters in a sport that is physically and mentally demanding, where discipline and rigorous training are essential to compete at European and Olympic championship levels. Recent successes, including becoming European champion in 2025 in Chisinau, place her among the remarkable women who inspire young girls in the country to pursue high-performance sports.
