About

Alexandra Buzhilova was born on October 8, 1960, in Chișinău and became one of the most eminent personalities in the field of anthropology and paleoanthropology. After graduating from the Faculty of Biology of Moscow State University, majoring in Anthropology, she dedicated herself to the study of paleopathology and the adaptation of ancient populations. A Doctor of Historical Sciences since 2001, with a thesis on the adaptive processes of the ancient population of Eastern Europe, Buzhilova has built an exceptional career in Russian scientific research, being internationally recognized for her innovative contributions. Since 2008, Alexandra Buzhilova has held the position of Director of the Research Institute and Museum of Anthropology of Moscow State University, one of the most prestigious institutions of its kind in the world. An Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 2016, she coordinates multiple multidisciplinary research projects combining paleodemography, paleoecology, and paleogenetics. Her scientific work comprises over 300 publications, 21 monographs, and numerous studies concerning the diseases of ancient populations, archaeological bioreconstruction, and the effects of physiological stress on human skeletons from past eras. Alexandra Buzhilova's professional achievements have been recognized by numerous awards and high-level scientific responsibilities. She is a member of the editorial boards of prestigious journals such as "Russian Archaeology", "Human Evolution", and a member of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists and the International Paleontological Association. Additionally, she serves as Vice-President of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences for the History of World Culture. Her research on the skeletons from Sunghir and other important Paleolithic sites has contributed significantly to the understanding of prehistoric human behavior and health.
